Continue Reading »Bamboo is the planets fastest growing wood resource and can grow up to 60cm in one day, to celebrate this UnitDot Eyewear which bases all its sunglasses and optical lenses around a bamboo foundation is launching in the UK on May 6th 2010.
UnitDot bamboo sunglasses the brain child of Hong Kong based designer Cyrus Wong are to be released by the UK based licensee Mr. Colin Ball from Chelmsford in Essex. The bamboo sunglasses, which are the only complete bamboo range in the United Kingdom, will go on sale in Excentree Eco Fashion Collection Store as of 9am Thursday May 6th.
When asked “Why should people buy UnitDot Sunglasses over any other brand?” Colin Ball responded,
For years the bigger and well known brands have dominated the sunglasses market but they still choose to only deal with regular high street fashions and not address the important global issues that we face everyday. By choosing Unitdot over other brands customers still receive the ultimate in up to the minute fashion styling, while also showing awareness of eco fashion and the issues that surround the problems with our planet. Buying one pair of bamboo glasses is the first step toward small lifestyle changes, at a very small cost.
There will be three styles available within the range; a classic aviator, a perspex aviator and a tortoise shell affect wayfarer design. This will be the basis of the initial launch with more to follow over the coming months. The bamboo sunglasses which have a RRP of £120 will initially be sold in the eco fashion collaborative store Excentree for a special introductory price of £80. Along with being able to plant a tree for each pair bought, £2 will also be donated to the UNICEF Children’s appeal worldwide.
James McAloon owner of Excentree talking about the release said, “Unitdot bamboo sunglasses appear well crafted, durable and stylish. It is difficult to offer something completely new to a sector in which almost every variation of styling has been tried previously, but bamboo is something completely new and breeds new life into a stagnate, stalling market sector. Although the sunglasses are not completely bamboo in formation, they certainly are different and unique in ever increasing circulation of mediocrity.”
With only weeks until the beginning of June and the arrival of some much needed sunshine to banish the memories of one of the longest, coldest winters in many a year, the bamboo shoots of Unitdot could spell for some sustainable summer sunshine.

Continue Reading »With the expected arrival of UnitDot Bamboo Sunglasses into the Excentree store on Thursday May 6th we thought it prudent to update you with a little more information about UnitDot and it’s designer Cyrus Wong, and also the UK licensed distributor Colin Ball. Not wishing to re-invent the wheel when someone had done such a good job already we spoke to our friends over at the Eco Fashionista UK & Ireland and after a little bit of negotiation they allowed us to use the interview they posted early last month. We have a one on one update interview planned with Colin for Thursday of this week in which he will tell us all about the last month in the run up to the launch of UnitDot in the UK, but for now we shall hand you over to the news desk of the Eco Fashionista.
As promised we took some time this week to uncover some information about the roots of the Bamboo Based sunglasses brand UnitDot. Eco fashion for the summer is going to be a very important factor in all wardrobe aspects for 2010 and each and every Eco Fashionista in the UK & Ireland should be aware of this great product. Having dug a little deeper I found that Colin the UK representative of UnitDot has been working closely with Hong Kong born and based UnitDot designer Cyrus Wong. Before diving face first into the questions that I asked the pair in our resent online video conference (great for environment and no need to face the travel congestion) I would like to set the scene.
Cyrus has over 10 years experience in eyewear product design, manafacture and delivery with luxury brands throughout Asia and Western Europe. Cyrus wishing to branch out and create his own brand in a direction that was in haramony with nature but ensured that the best of his experience in Asian, European and North American style is incorporated into each design manifested in the creation of UnitDot. Couple this with Colin Ball a highly motivated ex-carpenter from Essex in the United Kingdom and I believe a winning formulae was born. Colin suffered an on sight injury which led him to take stock and make a brave career change. Colin was a prominent member of the building trade contracting for several sites. A trip to Thailand led him into eyewear. Colin realised that due to his injury he should probably move away from the manual intensive labour. Colin choose fashion; although I am not sure I could agree that it is easier work, it is different without doubt.
We took some time to speak with Cyrus and Colin just this week and they were kind enough to answer our slightly but not overly intrusive questions;
Cyrus tell us a little about you…
I’m Cyrus Wong, I am the unitdot eyewear production house creative director. Before UnitDot I was an assistant project manager of a major eyewear manufacturer for over 10 years. My focus had mainly been brand design, including in house branding and licensed development. I had a lot of experience in the design and development of eyewear under a technical scope.
In my time working for other brands I had great opportunities to work with many influential and exciting people across the globe.
In 2008/09, I knew it was time to start my own business, I had enough experience, I was ready to Rock N Roll.
Cyrus can you tell us a little more about UNITDOT…
Unitdot eyewear production house opened its doors 2008 focus on OEM and ODM design projects! In 2009 we were ready to build our own new brand ‘UnitDot’. The direction was to plan and create eyewear fashion with a casual European street style. I want our designs to be easy to wear & easy to find. We know that everyone wants to buy stand out, high quality glasses and we want UnitDot to be at the forefront of the market. We hope that UnitDot will be associated with the best of exclusive brands across Europe and North America in the coming decades. Help us out get on board.
Colin what is you Background in terms of career?
I have always been a sort of arty person, good with art drawing and sketching that sort of thing, when I left school I wanted to be a cartoonist .. lol.. Well things do change. Anyhow I changed my direction and became a carpenter, bench joiner. Eventually over the years I became a contractor and a house builder. However about 5 yrs ago I fancied a career change, since then I have been happily selling and marketing products online.
Colin what inspired you to get involved with UnitDot designs?
Mainly because of the years I spent as a carpenter, I love the smell and look of natural woods. I think that in these modern changing times style was and has been a major part of growing up.
From my days as a soul boy and a new romantic in the 80’s.
The fact that UnitDot is made with natural sub sustainable bamboo, with a new concept on an old style of fashion eye ear, blending the old with the new is magic.
Cyrus how would you describe the UnitDot design style, design signatures and who is your targeted customer?
I feel that UNITDOT designs, are ideal for the age group of 18 to 35. A modern look with a style to match, however not neglecting the laid back casual feel. UnitDot plans to always incorporate some form of Bamboo, simple or cut; I doubt you would ever mistake UnitDot with another brand.
Cyrus what designers, or other products inspire the UnitDot Range?
Unitdot focuses on northern European style and Scandinavian design, but we know it may not be suited to everyone’s taste. However we have developed the style to ensure that it incorporated the best of modern forward thinking fashion. In particular I have been influenced by Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford.

Bamboo is the worlds fastest regenerating wood source making Bamboo Sunglasses incredibly Eco Friendly. Bamboo can grow up to 60cm per day
Cyrus what makes UnitDot special?
Our design experience with the bigger brands in the past is special for us. This meant that we know how to create great shape for fabulous looking eyewear. Our experience set us up to create the very best in eyewear, we would never have known how to create the best in eyewear if we hadn’t worked in eyewear design. Our designs are very detailed and difficult to produce; we stand out when it comes to eyewear.
Colin what obstacles did you and UnitDot have to overcome? How did you overcome them?
Amazingly Cyrus and I have had a very good working relationship right from the very start for just about a year now Cyrus and I have been working well together. I deal directly with the Cyrus and we both share ideas to help promote UNITDOT further.
Colin what is your opinion on Climate Change?
For years the climate has been changing. If we can make just a little difference by becoming more aware of our natural surroundings and resources through fashion and other means that is important. By replacing the things that we take so readily from our planet, by planting new trees and using natural fibers and by ultimately cutting down our carbon foot print, just maybe it will make the world a better place for my children and any future grandchildren.
Colin what has been your greatest moment on the UnitDot journey so far?
The greatest moment for me personally so far is meeting so many people that are willing to help promote a new concept of an old favourite product in eyewear. I never realised before how friendly the people in the eco fashion industry could be, and how supportive they can be with the simplest postings.
Colin why do you think sustainability in fashion is important?
I feel that it is very important because it makes everybody aware of the environment. The issues that surround the problems with the planet by introducing it in the concept of fashion, it brings it into the public eye, instead of leaving it on the back burner.
Colin what are the best and worst things about working in your industry?
The best part is getting positive feedback regarding the designs. People are surprised when I say that they are made from bamboo, when I told somebody recently, they replied with “how do you see out of them, if there made of bamboo?” I had to explain that they didn’t work like house shutters for your eyes! he he…
I think the worst part is trying to get people past the idea that UNITDOT is a completely new brand, it might be new but the designs are in terms of quality as good as Prada, or D&G. These are not your 20quid throw away glasses they are a fashion and quality statement.
Colin how much will UnitDot Sunglasses Retail at when they hit the market?
These exceptional Sunglasses will retail at a RRP of £120 for the intial designs. For the UnitDot level of quality, this is phenomenal value. Please feel free to ask any questions we will fill you in fully.
Colin where will you be able to purchase?
We are currently working on introducing UnitDot to retail outlets nationwide, but in the immediate sense UnitDot will be available from Excentree Fashion Collections. I met James from Excentree through the Ethical Fashion Network and he has been as excited about UnitDot as Cyrus and I. He has been a great help.
Colin what is your philosophy of life?
I feel that basically life is what you make it.
To be honest we all have our ups and downs, and we are all on a planet spinning at a thousand miles an hour with no driver. I know that sometimes it feels you like you just want it to stop and get off, but hey ho, you only have one life, and it is full of as many chances as you wish to take . Opportunity knocks more then once in a lifetime for most people, but never enough for others. So in a play on words “Grab the horns by the balls and give it a go.”
Cyrus is their a human side to the UnitDot Collection?
Unitdot only uses bamboo from a controlled grown bamboo supplier in China. The bamboo is used in the making of tables, chairs, garden bridges and for decoration products only, and new bamboo is then re-grown to replace what is used.
By doing this it means that the wild bamboo that grows naturally is not cut down. This helps to save the wild life and preserve other natural resources in these areas.
The UnitDot designs are in my opinion fabulous and with more to come in the coming months, we are surely looking at a hot thing. I have been looking at some of the optical glasses as well and these are equally wonderful and I will post some pictures later this week. I am sure you will agree, there is something special about new, enthusiastic brands wishing to break the market. Do you want to stand out? Step out from the crowd? I am sure looking forward to donning my UnitDots.
UnitDot will soon be available for a Pre-Order for a limited time at a special introductory price of £80 from Excentree Fashion Collections www.excentree.com
I hope this gives all our regular readers a little more insight into what UnitDot Bamboo based sunglasses will be bringing to the Excentree Store. We are incredibly excited to invite this aspiring brand into our collection and we firmly believe that UnitDot, Colin and Cyrus have a bright future together with Excentree and beyond.
Continue Reading »Like all our new designers we took some time out with Honey Wong from Honey Hand bags to find out some information behind her simple but effective bags. This is what she had to say;
Company/Designer Name: Honey Handbags
What is your Background in terms of career?
My mother taught me to sew when I was a young girl. I helped my mother make things to sell from our home.
How did Honey Hand Bags get started?
I watched the news in Taiwan and it said there are a lot of kids from the mountains that can’t even get breakfast in the morning. They have to go to school without eating breakfast because their family can’t afford it. I felt so sad when I watched the news. I am not rich but I really want to help the kids to get a better life. So I told my husband about this idea, then my husband helped me make a website for English customers.
What inspires your designs?
I like simple shapes for handbags. If I see an interesting simple shape anywhere it may give me an idea for a handbag. The shopper bag I designed is shaped like a laichi fruit in Taiwan. The inside fabric is also the same color as laichi fruit.
How would you describe the Honey Hand Bags design style, design signatures and who is your targeted customer?
You could call my style “retro minimal.” I like to refine classic design to the basic forms. Today so many girls add so much to outfits that is useless. My customers are practical girls who don’t want to give corporations more money to destroy the environment.
What designers, or other products inspire or influence the Honey Hand Bags Range?
I just make practical handbags that can be used for every occasion. I really like classic western and eastern designs. I guess I want simple bags for a simple girl like me. Maybe I am doing the opposite of what current fashion designers do. I’m just a seamstress not a designer so I do what comes natural to me. I’m reading books about fashion design and I’m going to start designing simple wraps, drapes and sarongs for summer. Those clothes should be ready in June.
What makes Honey Hand Bags special?
Every handbag is made by me. Maybe if business is good I will hire other seamstress like me. All of my handbags are 100% eco-friendly. No chemicals or unethical products are used.
What obstacles did you have to overcome , How did you overcome them?
The hardest part is English grammar! My English speaking friends help me edit my English for each article. Also it was really hard to find good organic cotton made in Taiwan so I used organic cotton made in Japan. I want my country to make more organic products but many customers don’t care about sustainability.
What is your opinion on Climate Change?
I really feel hopeless sometimes concerning climate change. Now in Taiwan every spring many sandstorms come from china. We have to wear face masks and stay in our homes because of dirty rain. There is nothing we can do to stop China from polluting our air. People in Taiwan care more about money then the air or water. All of Taiwanese nature is being polluted, and soon our only water will have to be imported. Our government only cares about doing business with more polluting companies! My country might be the first country to die from climate change and people don’t care enough to change. It makes me so sad.
What has been your greatest moment on the Honey Hand Bags journey so far?
I am so happy so many people started following me on twitter and have helped me with business like James from Excentree.com.
Why do you think sustainability in fashion is important?
I think people who choose eco-fashion are the people who have made their life dedicated to saving the world.
What are the best and worst things about working in your industry?
The best thing is maybe I can be an example for other people in Taiwan to live a sustainable lifestyle. The worst thing is many corporations make a lot of money from seamstress like me and pollute my country.
What’s your philosophy of life?
I just want a simple and clean life. I want to take care of my family and friends and help poor people like the mountain aborigines in Taiwan.
Is their a human side to the Honey Hand Bags Collection?
It’s just me, my friends and family who are Honey Handbags.
Continue Reading »UnitDot Sunglasses who will join the Excentree Fashion Collections Store in the coming weeks have released this excellent video about the impact of climate change and to give you a heads up to why you should purchase their sunglasses over the regular pair of aviators you will undoubtedly purchase this summer.

Not only do they have all these wonderful characteristics but by purchasing through Excetree you will get to plant one tree with each pair bought and £1 will be diverted to the Excentree GIVE Foundation, which will then be put toward supporting children’s charities globally.
